Station Forty Three – That Beer and Food Factory
The concept for the interior of S43 was to reflect the unique character of our city, Durban – industrial, somewhat raw, but vibrant and beautiful too.
This is expressed in the brutal elements of exposed metal, concrete and brick softened by abundant lighting, rich wood, exuberant colour and lush planting.
Street art adds to the urban flavour with the works given sophistication and brought indoors by breaking them up into tiles.
Our desire was to link art and design – 19 artworks were painted by Ewok and Xavier in different street art styles and used to make 994 wooden tiles.
The bar and long table act as a canvas and are clad in a comic book composition of the tiles.
We came up with a method of fabrication, like a mechano set, for all the furniture at S43 using the same metal profile and wooden inserts which gives coherence and versatility to the design.
As S43 will often be used as a function venue, industrial wheels on the furniture allow the space to be easily reconfigured as needed.
